Falkbuilt Creates Tranquil Space for Parents
Flexible process allows for on time delivery
The Lactation Lounge at Kansas City’s City Hall is a sanctuary in the middle of a busy floor — a place for nursing parents to book one of four private rooms during the workday so they can pump, find some peace and quiet, or connect with other parents.
“It was a challenge to build in this space, since the ceilings were under eight feet,” says Jenny Harriman, senior project manager with the City. “Once we started demolition, we realized we could raise the ceiling height. Falkbuilt was very flexible in working with us to increase the height in the lounge area in the middle of construction and still deliver the project on time.”
The previous lactation room was in desperate need of a refresh. “It was an old office that had been divided with panels and curtains into three different cubicles, and we wanted to create a spa experience with all the amenities for the new mothers to be excited about sharing this new space at work.”
Thanks to the flexibility of Digital Component Construction, Jenny and her team were able to work closely with Falkbuilt Kansas City to create four private stations, complete with doors, as well as a common area with a sink and cabinetry. Lactating parents can book a private room but they can also use the lounging area, where they can share pictures of their babies, wash equipment, and use the microwave or refrigerator.
“We really provided a one-stop shop for this project,” says Vicki Allenbrand at Falkbuilt Kansas City.
The City of Kansas City is already a big fan of Falkbuilt, having installed full solutions on several floors, but this space is proving especially popular with everyone. “It’s been a big hit,” says Jenny. “It’s so nice, everyone wishes they could use it, too.”
