“Fun, challenging” ideas take flight
PET baffle ceiling features airplane for great acoustics + high flying aesthetic

After traveling thousands of miles and being assembled and disassembled in different cities across North America, a booth featuring Faklbuilt’s healthcare solutions landed back where it started, in Calgary. The display, the star of the show at last fall’s Falkbuilt Family Reunion in Phoenix and the HCD show in San Antonio, needed a ceiling in its new home.
Falkbuilt designer, Maeve Hegarty, brainstormed with CEO Mogens Smed, and they decided to create ceiling baffles that fit with the original design inspiration for the booth, the Virgin Hotel in Dallas. Virgin’s founder, Richard Branson, is also behind Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Galactic, so why not make an aircraft out of Falkbuilt’s ceiling baffles?
“As with all things Falk, it was a team effort with input from Young-Sun Ryu from product development and our install team,” Maeve says of the “fun, challenging” aeronautic design constructed entirely of standard ceiling baffles. Made from recycled PET, precision cut, and suspended from the ceiling to enhance the acoustic performance, the plane demonstrates the creative power of Digital Component Construction.

The space features a number of flat ceiling solutions as well as six new standard design options for baffle ceilings. “They’re all equally elegant and functional in a range of colors,” she says. “We have a lot to choose from.”
Maeve designed the plane in Revit, the industry standard design tool that Echo empowers in the cloud, creating an engineering accurate 3D model and ensuring what’s designed is exactly what’s built. “With Echo’s efficient time saving tools, designers can focus more on upfront design and creativity which results in a more enriched and meaningful space,” says Maeve. “Without Echo, I’d feel like I was back in the Stone Age.”
